Fueling the semiconductor boom: Austin College launches engineering degree

SHERMAN, Texas (KTEN) — Austin College is breaking new ground with Grayson County’s first Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree, built to fuel the booming semiconductor industry.

The idea began taking shape when tech giants like Texas Instruments began to expand in Sherman.

“Towards the end of 2022, when all of the investment announcements in the semiconductor industry came up, the facility had the idea to bring an engineering program here," explained Dr. Rahul Renu, founding director of the Austin College engineering program. "They hired me in the fall of 2024, and since then I've been working on establishing what the curriculum might be.”

 

Three years later, the program is officially set to launch — designed to meet the growing demand for a skilled workforce as the region’s tech sector continues to expand.
