Sherman is Rich in Culture and Entertainment

Sherman’s vibrant downtown is a gathering place for hospitality, arts, and entertainment. This area received the official Texas Cultural District designation by the Texas Commission on the Arts and is among only 50 other cities in Texas to receive this prestigious designation.

Downtown Sherman offers classic antiques, boutiques, salons, restaurants, a farmers market, crafts, an art gallery, a public library, churches, museums, murals, and more. The historic county courthouse is at its center.

Sherman Jazz Museum, founded in 2010, is dedicated to the education, preservation, and enjoyment of jazz. Collections included thousands of vinyl albums, memorabilia, and recording equipment from bygone days to present. The museum is housed in a Neo-Classical Revival style building that served as a Masonic Lodge Temple for 60 years. Restoration efforts for the museum retained the original architectural style and kept a good number of the original doors, floors, ceiling fans, hardware, and lighting.

The Sherman Museum is a historic Carnegie Library built in 1914 and is one of a handful of remaining Carnegie Library buildings in Texas. The museum, partially funded by the City of Sherman, houses Grayson-County-oriented artifacts and hosts exhibits and events. The museum houses three oil-on-wood paintings by Texas artist James Swann which were installed in 1934 and are possibly the only examples of Works Projects Administration (WPA) art in Grayson County. Additionally, the entire community looks forward to Dino Days every summer when the museum hosts its special dinosaur exhibit featuring fossils and hands-on activities.

Sherman also hosts the Third Thursday Art Walk, a monthly event where you can shop downtown small businesses on the third Thursday of every month from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Original artwork is featured and some of the artists are there for meet and greets. Downtown Sherman boutiques feature sales and certain places even offer refreshments.

Sherman, Texas hosts an annual art exhibit in winter featuring works created by regional artists of all ages. During this month-long Winter Art Tour, the Sherman Art Dash takes place. Participants buy tickets for the chance to dash to claim a work of art. A variety of mediums are featured: oil paintings, acrylic paintings, photography, and woodcarving.

For over 40 years, Sherman Main Street has hosted Arts Fest each September on the Municipal Lawn in Downtown. The event features over 100 craft vendors, food trucks, live music, performance art, activities for kids, and a 5K Fun Run.

The Sherman Art League is dedicated to art appreciation in the community. The league meets every month to watch a demonstration by an artist. Members can often tap into their inner artist with hands-on participation while following along with the demonstration.

Sherman’s collaborative mural shows the arts are within reach for everyone in this friendly city. Led by artist David Freeman, the painting of this community mural took place over the course of a few months. Locals were encouraged to grab a paintbrush to help complete the design Freeman created.

The Sherman Symphony Orchestra (SSO) is a vital part of the Sherman community because it is dedicated to making music accessible to everyone since its founding in 1966. The SSO creates a collective civic identity by presenting live concerts and serving as a primary resource for music education. Plug-In Texoma is hosted by the Chamber of Commerce at 8 a.m. on Tuesdays at the Finley 502 as a way for business owners to connect and share ideas and announcements.

Coffee with the Mayor is held on the first Friday of each month at rotating locations and features great coffee, interesting conversation, and a chance to hear good news about Sherman.

Sherman Celtic Festival and Highland Games is a family-friendly event held every March in Pecan Grove West Park featuring outstanding music, dance, and athletic performers.

Craft the Night Away: Craft Beer Festival and Fiddling Contest is held every June in Downtown Sherman on the Courthouse Square and features live music, craft beer, cider, and mead tastings from approximately 30 breweries and a fiddling contest sanctioned by the Texas Old Time Fiddlers Association.

Lights on the Lake at Pecan Grove Park-West is our annual Independence Day celebration! There’s fun for the whole family with a free concert, food vendors, and spectacular fireworks.

Hispanic Heritage Festival hosted by the Hispanic Heritage Council of Texoma features music, food, and fun.

Stroll on the Square is a wine and food tasting event held every October in our historic downtown that also features music and shopping.

Trick or Treat on Travis and Wall Streets kicks off Halloween in historic downtown Sherman as a safe, family-friendly, and fun way to let kids show off their great costumes.

Veterans Day Parade in early November in downtown Sherman celebrates the service of our United States military veterans.

Snowflake Festival and Christmas Parade kick off the holiday season in Downtown Sherman with food vendors, a community parade, and the lighting of the big Christmas tree.
