The Sherman Economic Development Corp. is looking for ways to help support women going to science, technology, engineering and mathematic career fields. The SEDCO board voted unanimously Tuesday to update its program of work to include an action item related to encourage and foster women to go into these fields.
The new focus area for SEDCO comes amid increasing demand for skilled workers by high-tech and advanced manufacturing, including Texas Instruments and GlobalWafers. The initiative also represents the latest effort by SEDCO to support new groups ranging from entrepreneurs to women- and minority-owned businesses.
“That’s really the first step in the process, to get a couple people to the table and have those discussions and just literally brainstorm,” SEDCO Board Chair Janie Bates said Tuesday.
While SEDCO’s program of work has been updated to include this focus area, the economic developer is still working to determine what form this support will come in. Bates said stakeholders, including representatives for SEDCO, GlobalWafers, Austin College and Workforce Solutions Texoma will meet next week to have the first conversations on developing a strategy.
