The City of Sherman was founded in 1846 by several Grayson County commissioners. Sherman began its growth in 1852 and continues to develop, being directly in the path of the rapid northward expansion of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Partnered with the Sherman Economic Development Corporation (SEDCO), the sales tax for economic development provides the necessary incentives to attract large, high-quality employers. Sherman eagerly awaits a future that will be worthy of its proud heritage.
Austin College, Grayson College and Southeastern Oklahoma State University work closely together with students to ensure that education is affordable and accessible to those who wish to pursue college degrees. College courses are available to high school students and elementary education classes are taught onsite at Grayson College by professors and adjunct instructors, supplemented by online coursework. Students are offered transfer arrangements between a number of community colleges and four-year institutions.
Sherman is the county seat of Grayson County and strives to provide our public with quality government related services including the Sheriff's Department, county jail, North Texas Regional Airport, county road system and court system.
Greater Texoma Utility Authority
The Greater Texoma Utility Authority, also known as "GTUA", is a local political subdivision of the State and is governed by a Board of Directors. The Authority provides its member cities with assistance in financing and construction of water and wastewater facilities. The Authority may also be requested to provide operations services for water and wastewater facilities by member cities and others.
North Texas Regional Airport
The North Texas Regional Airport (NTRA) borders State Hwy 289, connecting the DFW metroplex to Lake Texoma. The airport has over 325 shovel-ready acres of land, a 9,000' x 150' runway, and a staffed control tower with four instrument approaches. With a recently completed $17 million in capital improvements, the proactive economic development organizations of surrounding communities ensure a business-friendly environment.
The Sherman Chamber of Commerce has been serving business in the Sherman area since 1913. Today, the Chamber strives to provide the best services to the Sherman community just as they have for over 90 years. Additionally, the Chamber focuses on providing resources and education for business owners, and acting as the "eyes and ears" of the business community on legislative and regulatory issues.
In collaborative efforts with the counties of Grayson, Fannin and Cooke, the Texoma Council of Governments (TCOG) shares resources and secures opportunities that benefit the entire region. Their efforts provide better cooperation, reduce duplication and increase efficiencies throughout the region.
The Center for Workplace Learning at Grayson College (CWL) offers flexible professional development and job training for employers and individuals. The CWL is a result of education, business and economic development groups joining forces to support local employers. The Texas Workforce Commission has a regional office in Sherman, Workforce Solutions Texoma, to provide services to employers and employees by listing job postings, offering recruitment and screening, providing labor market information and other resources.
